Young People of Nimbin have spoken!

YAG - Youth Action Group

11 incredible young people joined us at Nimbin Youth Centre, alongside four supportive adults, to have an open and honest conversation about what’s working, what’s missing and what dreams we have for our town. There was laughter, real talk, big ideas…….and yes, a ton of pizza!

We kicked things off with intros — everyone shared one fun thing they’re working on, reading, or enjoying at the moment. From there, the conversation flowed.

What’s good about nimbin?
Young people shared the things they love about this quirky little town:

  • Mardigrass and local festivals
  • The skatepark
  • Nimbin Youth events like the dance parties in the Town Hall
  • A strong sense of freedom
  • Broken bridge (yep, apparently it’s a vibe)

What needs Work?
The group didn’t hold back on some of the challenges they face:

  • Feeling unsafe in some public spaces
  • Shops and takeaways close too early (especially after school)
  • Not enough jobs for young people under 16
  • No 24/7 shop or IGA
  • Boredom and lack of youth-friendly activities
  • Dirty public toilets and a pool that’s often closed or not clean

Big Ideas from young minds!
This group didn’t just talk problems — they brought solutions. Here are just some of the youth-led ideas we’re now looking into:

  • A local jobs board to help connect young people with work
  • More events like karaoke nights, movie nights and youth-run festivals
  • Life skills programs at Nimbin Youth (think cooking, budgeting, resume help)
  • Driving school access for young people
  • Homework and study support space at Nimbin Youth

What’s Next?
We’re already moving on some of these ideas! Our next steps include:

  • Exploring more youth-safe spaces
  • Talking to local shops about staying open a little later (school finishes at 3:15pm)
  • Reaching out to the pool and council about access and maintenance
  • Starting up a youth jobs board
  • Planning our first youth-led community event (Karaoke baby!)

Big thanks!
To every young person who showed up and shared their thoughts — thank you. You are the heart of this community.

We’re so excited to take these ideas further, together. This is just the beginning!
