About this workshop

Learning Outcomes

Participants will learn how to code, design and launch their own live website online!  We will be teaching:

• The essentials of launching a website, including how to register domains and setup hosting.
• The WordPress platform and how to work with themes and plugins.
• Web design fundamentals, including navigation, coding and content.
• Adding and editing content on a website.

Young people will get to choose what website they want to launch, including the domain name.

Requirements

• Participants must be within the ages of 12 – 19 years old, and be residing in the Northern Rivers region of NSW.
• Participants should have a general knowledge of how to use a computer, and how to use the internet.
• Experience with coding or websites is not required, however some ability to grasp technical concepts will be useful for participants.
• Participants will need to bring their own lunch, or money to purchase their own lunch.

Computers

• Participants will need access to a computer, ideally a laptop, PC or Mac. Tablets such as iPads are not suitable for this workshop.
• A limited number of computers will be available to borrow at no cost, which you can request in your registration.
• Participants will also need:
  • An up-to-date internet browser, such as Chrome or Safari.
  • Access to an email address, such as Gmail or Outlook.
  • A computer/laptop with wireless connection, so they can connect to our Wi-Fi.
  • A computer mouse is helpful but not compulsory.

Website Details

All necessary website fees are covered for 12 months.

• Each participant will be provided the essentials for launching their own website, including:
  • A free domain name for 12 months.   Domains containing .com.au will require an ABN.
  • A free hosting account for 12 months.
  • Free installation of the WordPress foundation and essential plugins.
• After 12 months, participants may choose to renew their domain registration and hosting for a fee.
  • Domains can cost approx $10-$20/year.
  • Hosting can cost from $10/month.
• After 12 months, websites will get automatically deleted if not renewed and paid for.

What type of website can I code, design and launch?

• Online blogs, journals, magazines, folios, news websites are suitable projects to launch in this workshop.
• Websites with text, images, graphics, photography and video are all suitable.
• Business websites are suitable to launch, however this introductory workshop will not be focussing on e-commerce, shopping carts or payments.
• Participants may choose to work solo, or partner with fellow participants on a group website together.
